NEW YORK — The FDNY welcomed a new four-legged member to the department after she was rescued from an abandoned “crack house.”
Animal rescuers found a pit bull, named Ashley, malnourished and covered in cigarette burns last month, but had nowhere to take her. She was left for at least two days without food or water, reported CBS News.
“It was freezing out. There was nothing in the house. No, we didn’t think about it — we just ran and got her and said we’ll figure out what we were going to do after we got her out of there,” Erica Mahnken said.
Mahnken and her fiance decided to bring Ashley to a Lower East Side FDNY station, who agreed to temporarily look after her. Three days later, firefighters wanted to adopt Ashley.
“My heart wants to explode,” Mahnken said. “Everyone’s so quick to judge a dog, especially a dog you don’t know where it came from … it is very satisfying.”
Firefighters created an Instagram account for Ashley, who already has over 11,000 followers. Crews post daily updates on her adventures and whereabouts.
