NEW YORK — A retired 90-year-old FDNY firefighter who had been missing for 36 hours was found safe by another firefighter.
NY Daily News reported that firefighter Joseph Pirzinger, 27, was working when he saw an elderly man at a nearby corner around 1:30 a.m. He knew it was Peter Campanelli – who had been missing since Thursday. Campanelli never returned home after running some errands.
“My grandparents were good friend with Pete and his wife,” Pirzinger said. “When I saw him, I took a double take and I told the (fire truck) to stop and let me out. I was screaming, ‘Pete, is that you?’”
Campanelli, a chief engineer, retired in 1985 after 31 years in the department. He was taken back to the firehouse and was later reunited with his family.
