ATHENS, Ala. — A morning wreck put the Athens Fire Department’s only backup fire truck out of commission, Fire Chief Tony Kirk said.
The fire truck received damage to its right wheel, door and front bumper when it was struck by full-size pickup this morning.
Firefighters were at the site of an earlier wreck on Interstate 65 northbound near Huntsville-Browns Ferry Road when the Station 3’s engine truck was hit.
A body shop is assessing the damage. Kirk expects an estimate later today.
Kirk said one firefighter was in the truck getting a piece of equipment with the wreck occurred, but no one was injured in the collision.
Kirk said the pickup driver refused treatment.
Kirk said he doesn’t know why the pickup hit the fire truck, which was parked on the inside on the rumble strips of the northbound lane.
The chief said the 1988 engine is the city’s oldest fire truck and was being used while another engine is in the shop. He is relocating a tower truck to Station 3.
