Firefighters reportedly rescued one woman, but were pulled out of the building when the flames became too intense

NEWTON, Mass. — The state fire marshal says an elderly woman is dead after fire hits a two-family house in Newton.

Fire Marshal Stephen Coan said investigators located the body of the woman after the fire early Monday on Waverly Avenue.

Neighbors said they awoke at about 1:30 a.m. to see flames shooting from the house.

Firefighters reportedly rescued one woman, but were pulled out of the building when the flames became too intense.

Coan did not release the identity of the woman. He said the investigation into the cause of the fire was continuing.
