LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Two firefighters were injured battling an overnight fire at a residence with multiple additions Tuesday.

Firefighters responded at 9:53 p.m. to the home, in the 1200 block of Church St., in Anthony, N.M. to find heavy smoke from the roof, said Do-a Ana County Fire Department Captain Kellen Tarkington.

The couple was able to escape before firefighters arrived, and crews rescued one of their cats, a ferret and some fish. However, one firefighter suffered a minor injury to his neck during the operation, while another wounded his shoulder when a piece of sheet rock fell on him, Tarkington said.

Firefighters from Anthony, Chamberino, La Union and El Paso’s West Valley found the blaze hard to get to because of the many voids created by the home’s many renovations, Tarkington said.

“It was an older home with several additions on it from different time periods,” Tarkington said. “It had several roofs over it, just older construction. I think the original part of the home was an old military barracks and they just added on from there.”

The cause of the fire and the dollar amount of the damage is still under investigation, but Tarkington said the home isn’t a total loss.
