MILWAUKEE — Two Milwaukee firefighters were hurt Friday battling a blaze in a four-apartment building in the Riverwest neighborhood, in the 2800 block of N. Pierce St.
Second Battalion Chief Ralph Gallow said one of the firefighters was injured when a door slid into him, knocking off the mask on his helmet. Steam blowing from the fire burned his face, Gallow said.
The other injured firefighter was part of the crew working from the roof. Gallow didn’t know the nature of his injuries. Both firefighters were taken from the scene by medical units.
None of the occupants of the building was injured. At least three of the four apartment units were occupied.
Jessica McCall, who lives in an upper unit with her 2-and 4-year old children, said, “I woke up and my kitchen was on fire.” She ran out from the building with her children.
Gallow credited firefighters with dousing the fire quickly before it could spread to occupied buildings on either side. The Milwaukee Fire Department had 13 units of equipment at the fire. He described damage as extensive.
