COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Two pit bulls were killed Saturday morning when flames ripped through a house at 1704 W. Cucharras St. on the city’s west side, firefighters said.

The fire started just before 10 a.m., caused by wood stove ashes that were improperly deposited in a cardboard box, said Colorado Springs Fire Lt. Carl Miller.

Within 15 minutes, a fire crew inside the house said the fire was extinguished and gave an “all clear” report after an interior search — indicating no people found. The pets, however, were unable to escape.

The blaze ripped a hole through flooring, causing at least $80,000 worth of damage, Miller said. About 30 firefighters were called, including a hazardous materials crew.
