SCIPIO, N.Y. — A malfunctioning wood stove may be the cause of a house fire that raged through the early hours of Wednesday morning in Scipio, according to fire officials.
A total of 23 fire departments were called to the scene of 3054 Fleming-Scipio Townline Road at around 4 a.m. Wednesday. A fire had broken out within the residence, and two residents within the home escaped unharmed. Wayne Pettit, chief of the Scipio Fire Department, said crews worked to get the fire under control for more than five hours. Two firefighters were taken to Auburn Community Hospital with symptoms of exhaustion due to the cold weather, according to the chief.
Firefighters were forced to contend with sub-freezing temperatures compounded by winds that pushed the fire back toward the structure to keep it burning, Pettit said. The fire was eventually rendered under control by around 9:30 a.m., though crews remained to snuff out hot spots within the home.
