CHESTERTOWN, Md. — The Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating a fire that tore through a building at Washington College in Chestertown.

Authorities say the fire broke out late Saturday at 515 Washington Avenue, where Washington College had leased a one-story building.

Authorities say the building was being used by the college for administrative purposes, and that the school’s finance and IT departments were housed there.

The building was unoccupied at the time of the blaze, which caused roughly $3.5 million in damage.

Authorities say roughly 80 firefighters were dispatched to the scene just before 8 p.m. on Saturday. Authorities say some firefighters received medical attention for minor injuries they sustained while fighting the blaze, and all have been treated and released.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
