FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — Five firefighters who were early on the scene of an East Farmingdale house fire were taken to the hospital Wednesday afternoon, as was a victim who was rescued from the residence, a fire official said.

Four firefighters were taken to St. Joseph Hospital, Bethpage, with minor burns and injuries, with the fifth taken to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, the official said. None of their conditions was life-threatening, said Joseph Scura, spokesman for the East Farmingdale Fire Department.

The condition of the victim, who was taken to NUMC, was unknown, he said.

The firefighter at NUMC was being evaluated by emergency department staff “to determine if hyperbaric treatment will be needed,” said Shelley Lotenberg, medical center spokeswoman.

Five fire departments responded to the blaze at Melville Road and Alexander Avenue, with the fire under control at about 4:30 p.m., Scura said.

Responding were firefighters from East Farmingdale, Farmingdale, South Farmingdale, Melville and Bethpage, he said. The call came in at around 3:21 p.m., said Scura.

The cause of the blaze was unknown, and the Suffolk County police arson squad was investigating, he said, as is the case when injuries have occurred.
