BANGLADESH — At least 230 shanties of a slum were gutted in a devastating fire that raged through the residence of lower income community at Shyamoli in the capital city Wednesday.
Firefighters said two people received burn injuries in the fire which damaged properties worth Tk 0.6 million (about $7,400) in the morning.
Police and witnesses said the incident took place from a shanty at about 9:00 am and spread to the whole slum commonly known as Tong Basti.
On information, several units of firemen rushed to the spot and doused the flame after frantic efforts with the help of locals and policemen at about 10:30 am.
Station officer of Fire Service and Civil Defense Department said the blaze was originated from electric short circuit and the injured persons were admitted to the Burn Unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile, five firemen were injured as they came in contact with live electric wires while drenching another fire that originated at the showroom of Bata Shoe Company located at 96, Green Road in the city.
Five units of fire brigade managed to extinguish the fire after four hours of frantic effort.
