CORINTH, Maine — A 7-year-old boy died Friday morning when a fire swept through a camper trailer in Corinth, the State Fire Marshal’s Office said.
The boy was identified as Christian Rand, whose body was found in the burned-out camper shortly after the fire was reported at 9:30 a.m.
His parents — Amanda and Nicholas Rand — were away at the time of the fire, according to Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety. He said the boy had stayed home from school Friday morning because of illness.
The camper was located on property owned by a relative, at 1487 Main St. in Corinth, near the Kenduskeag town line. All that was left standing of the camper was one wall.
A team of fire marshal investigators is now attempting to pinpoint the cause of the blaze, McCausland said late Friday morning.
Bangor Daily News reporter Ryan McLaughlin and photographer Kevin Bennett arrived at the scene just after 10 a.m. A firefighter kept everyone back from the trailer, which is not visible from the road.
“There are two people at the end of the driveway sobbing hysterically,” McLaughlin reported.
Fire crews from Hudson, Bradford, Glenburn and Corinth responded to the blaze along with Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Sgt. Tim York from the State Fire Marshal’s Office. A medical examiner arrived at the scene late Friday morning.
One lane of Route 15, which becomes Broadway when it reaches Bangor, was closed to traffic.
There was a fire at the same residence on June 27, 2001, according to Bangor Daily News archives. Clyde Richards resided there at the time and the mailbox still has the name “Richards” on it.
The car the couple at the end of the driveway drove to the scene is registered to a Corinth woman.
