Chicago firefighter injured in extra-alarm strip mall fire

CHICAGO — A firefighter was injured this morning in an extra-alarm fire that broke out at a strip mall on the city’s Southwest Side.

Shortly before 7 a.m., firefighters were called out to the mall on the 5400 block of South Kedzie Avenue, according to Fire Media.

The fire had spread to four storefronts at 5417, 5419, 5421 and 5425 S. Kedzie Ave. and a 2-11 alarm alert was called at the scene, said Fire Media. Over 100 firefighters responded to the alarm.

The injured firefighter was taken to Mercy Hospital and Medical Center.

As of 8 a.m., the fire was struck out but officials remained on the scene monitoring hot spots.
