GLENVILLE, N.Y. — After a firefighter and his expecting wife lost their home in a fire this week, their community is raising funds to help them get back on their feet.
Scotia firefighter Dan Marchand and his wife lost everything when their home caught fire Tuesday. The couple is expecting twin girls in May 2017.
“It adds a personal element that honestly every time I have to do it for somebody I know … every firefighter here knows Dan so it was difficult,” Glenville Fire Chief Paul Chevalier told WNTY.
Fellow firefighters responded to the blaze, which Chief Chevalier said was “one of the most difficult fires to fight because it wasn’t showing itself outside.”
A GoFundMe page created this week to help the couple rebuild has raised over $22,000. The Red Cross is providing clothing, food and other assistance for the couple.
Marchand, an active member of the Air National Guard, is set to deploy next month.
“No time is good for a fire, but right after Christmas and then you’re getting deployed in a month, and your wife’s pregnant, I feel for this guy immensely,” Chief Chevalier said.
