Doorbell alerts Mich. family to garage fire

Firefighters extinguished the flames in less than an hour and no one was injured

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A ringing doorbell is being credited for saving the life of family whose garage caught on fire and was spreading to their house Wednesday morning.

WOODtv reported that the fire sparked from one of the vehicles in the garage just before 1 a.m.

“They were alerted to the fire, not by smoke detectors but by the doorbell ringing. We’re not sure if that was by a neighbor ringing the doorbell or the shorting of the electrical system that caused the bell to go off,” Grand Rapids Fire Department Batallion Chief Bart Perry said.

The garage and vehicles inside were completely damaged and the fire also damaged portions of the house, according to the report. Firefighters extinguished the flames in less than an hour and no one was injured.
