Fire damages L.A. church property

The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — Fire damaged a building on a church property in the Sun Valley area early Tuesday.

It took about an hour for 100 firefighters to extinguish the fire in a building behind the Bethel Christian Reformed Church, officials said.

The fire was reported at 1:35 a.m. and flames were already through the roof of the one-story building when firefighters arrived, Fire Department spokesman Ron Myers said.

Firefighters had to retreat from the building because of safety concerns as the attic burned.

After fighting the flames from outside for about 30 minutes, they were able to resume an interior attack, Myers said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
