CARBON CLIFF, Ill. — A Carbon Cliff firefighter had just pulled in to his driveway after responding to a fire call when he discovered that another fire had broken out across the street from his own home.

Here’s what happened, according to Chief Mat Schnepple, of the Carbon Cliff-Barstow Fire Department. On Sunday afternoon, firefighters responded to a rural fire that could be seen off Interstate 88. The Carbon Cliff call was canceled because nearby Hillsdale Fire Department responded to the blaze. Among the firefighters who returned to Carbon Cliff was Battalion Chief Gary Stark, Schnepple said. Stark stayed at the fire station for a while, then headed home.

“About 4 p.m. we were dispatched to a report of smoke coming from the roof of a single-family home (at 242 Orchard Court) with the occupants still inside,” Schnepple said. “The 911 caller was actually my battalion chief, who had just left the Carbon Cliff station and was headed home for the evening from the Hillsdale call. He actually lives across the street from the house.”
