ST. PAUL, Minn. — A St. Paul firefighter was hospitalized with a minor injury after working on a house fire in the Highland Park neighborhood Tuesday.

Firefighters were called to the 1500 block of Eleanor Avenue about 10:30 a.m. for a basement fire that started in the laundry room, said Fire Marshal Steve Zaccard.

One person was in the home, and he got out safely. He was doing laundry in the basement, went upstairs and, a few minutes later, heard a smoke detector sounding, Zaccard said. The man went downstairs and saw the fire. He left and called 911.

The fire reached into the basement ceiling and spread to the first floor before firefighters stopped it.

One firefighter was injured “performing firefighting operations,” Zaccard said. He didn’t have additional information about what led to the injury. The firefighter was taken to Regions Hospital with minor trauma, Zaccard said.

The amount of damage the home sustained was not available Tuesday. The cause was under investigation.
