CARSON, Calif. — A 3-story apartment complex under construction was burning out of control early Thursday evening, sending a crew of more than 40 firefighters to battle the blaze.

The fire was reported at 5:01 p.m. in the 21800 block of Avalon Boulevard at a large residential structure that appears to be half-complete, officials said.

Within minutes, dozens of Los Angeles County firefighters were on scene battling towers of flame, which sent a massive plume of smoke pouring into the sky above Carson and Wilmington.

It wasn’t immediately clear what sparked the fire or if anyone was injured, said Inspector Don Kunitomi of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The fire occurred next to a large mobile home park, whose residents were evacuated, and across the street from Carson City Hall, officials said.
