Firefighters put out intentionally set Kan. fire

Fire officials reported heavy smoke, fire showing, determined structure to be vacant; firefighters contained blaze to rear interior of structure where it originated

TOPEKA, Kan. — The Topeka Fire Department responded to an intentionally set fire late Saturday in central Topeka, fire investigator Rusty Vollintine said.

Firefighters responded to 1630 S.W. Western Ave. shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday.

Fire officials first on the scene reported heavy smoke and fire showing and determined the structure to be vacant.

The fire was extinguished, keeping it contained to the rear interior of the structure where the fire originated.

The Topeka Fire Department’s Investigations Unit determined the fire was intentionally set.

Estimated damage loss was determined to be $5,000.

There were no reported injuries.
