Firefighters rescue 7 trapped in Chicago blaze

The apartment building’s smoke detectors didn’t sound until escape was too late

CHICAGO — Chicago firefighters early Wednesday made dramatic rescues from a burning apartment building on the city’s Northwest Side.

When fire officials arrived to the three-story building on the 3000 block of North Harlem, they said they could see people inside calling for help.

“The people up on the second floor were hanging out the windows yelling that a lot of smoke was filling their apartment and how are they going to get out,” Battalion Chief David Dietz said. “We tried to cover them up the best we could and let them down through the stairwells to get them out.”
