CHARLESTON, S.C. — As a retired firefighter and safety instructor, Ronnie Steele watched images of the fire scene with horror. When he read that Chief Rusty Thomas wouldn’t have changed the way he fought that fire, he was astounded.
“When I saw that it brought to mind a quote that I once saw Sigmund Freud say, ‘One of the signs of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and over again and expecting a different result.’ I mean, if you have 9 firefighters die, it would obvious something needs to change.”
Then he saw Mayor Riley stand behind Chief Thomas’ words, and went to Riley’s office.
