Gear stolen from Alaska firefighters helping with Calif. wildfire

Someone smashed their rental car’s windows and stole vital equipment; they’re hoping to get the items replaced soon

FRESNO, Calif. — Two firefighters from Alaska, who are helping battle the Rough Fire in the Sierra National Forest, had some of their gear stolen Saturday night.

ABC30 reported that Bryan Quimby and another firefighter have been staying a hotel for the last week. When they woke up Sunday morning, they found their rental car had the windows smashed and vital equipment stolen.

“Street value probably not very much because it’s a bunch of dirty clothes and used sleeping bags that are pretty smelly, but for us it’s pretty invaluable to be able to spend the night comfortably out in the woods,” said Quimby.

They filed a police report and have contacted their agencies to get the items replaced so they can get back to fighting the fire. They’re spending another two weeks doing aviation operations for the wildfire.
