TULSA, Okla. — Firefighters’ efforts to battle a morning house fire were hampered Wednesday by a broken fire hydrant.
Emergency dispatchers received multiple calls of a house fire in the 4600 block of North Main Street around 5:40 a.m., Capt. Rick Fogleman said. The residence, which neighbors said had been vacant, was fully engulfed when crews arrived.
The nearest fire hydrant broke into several pieces as firefighters used it to contain the flames, he said. Crews then laid hoses from neighboring blocks to extinguish the blaze.
An investigator will determine the cause of the fire. Fires in vacant houses without active utilities are routinely considered suspicious.
The residence appeared to be a total loss, Fogleman said.
