CHARLESTOWN, Mass. — A pair of illegal rooftop gas grills fueled a four-alarm Charlestown blaze and sent to the hospital nine firefighters who battled the inferno in nearly 100-degree heat, an official said.

The blaze started around noon on the roof of 41 High St., a four-story brick townhouse, where a propane-gas grill left unattended tipped over, said Fire Department spokesman Steve MacDonald. He said propane tanks are barred above the first floor in Boston.

The fire forced a second propane tank’s relief valve to pop, causing flames to shoot from the roof and spread to 39 High St., MacDonald said.

Heat that almost topped 100 degrees forced 125 jakes to battle the fire in shifts. Nine were treated at area hospitals and released, MacDonald said.
