ELKHART, Ind. — It took firefighters more than five hours to extinguish a stubborn farmhouse blaze Thursday just south of Elkhart.

Firefighters were dispatched about 9:30 a.m. to the 2900 block of County Road 28, where they encountered a tornado of smoke. The haze could be seen more than 100 feet in the air near the St. Joseph Valley Parkway.

Both homeowners were at work when the fire started and no one was injured, according to Baugo Fire Chief Tim Graves.

A wood-burning stove was possibly the cause, Graves said, noting that the homeowner told officials he had been having trouble with the stove earlier.
