LONG BEACH, Calif. — A firefighter pulled a trapped, unconscious 2-year-old boy to safety in Long Beach early Monday morning.
Authorities said the fire began in a second-floor bedroom in the 2600 block of 55th Way at about 1:30 a.m. Everyone in the house was able to get out except the toddler.
A firefighter searching the apartment for the boy fell through the floor up to his elbows, and then pulled himself up and continued looking until he found the boy hiding in a closet.
Paramedics got him breathing again on the way to a hospital. The boy is in stable but critical condition.
The firefighter had bumps and bruises, but he did not need to be hospitalized.
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
