CHESAPEAKE BEACH, Md. — Authorities say three Maryland firefighters injured battling a blaze that killed two people and destroyed several town houses have been released from hospitals.

The North Beach Volunteer Fire Department said in a statement on Facebook that the firefighters hurt in Wednesday’s fire are now home with their families. Five other firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion after the blaze in Chesapeake Beach, approximately 55 miles (85 kilometers) south of Baltimore.

Deputy Chief Stephen Stanton said firefighters were working to rescue two people trapped inside one home before it collapsed.

State Fire Marshal Brian Geraci says investigators are on the scene Thursday probing the cause.

The victims weren’t identified, but WUSA-TV reports Chesapeake Beach Mayor Pat Mahoney says officials believe a woman and a child were killed.
