DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Several Daytona Beach police officers suffered smoke inhalation at an apartment fire while trying to restrain the occupant of the unit who didn’t want firefighters to enter the structure, a fire official said Tuesday morning.
The occupant attempted to block access by standing in the doorway of the apartment, said Daytona Beach fire Lt. Larry Stoney.
The man identified by Daytona Beach police as Mark L. Smalley, 30, is being charged with resisting arrest without violence and preventing or obstructing extinguishment of a fire, said Daytona Beach police spokesman Jimmie Flynt.
