MALDEN, Mass. — Malden firefighters battled a three-alarm blaze this morning that injured one jake and displaced at least four residents, fire officials said.

“On arrival we had a heavy fire in the attic, heavy fire in the basement throughout the whole structure,” said Malden Fire Chief John ‘Jack’ Colangeli. “We had a report there was a student in the third-floor bedroom. We did a primary search, but there’s a lot of fire in that bedroom. On arrival we had a heavy fire in the attic, heavy fire in the basement throughout the whole structure. The primary search turned up negative. Now we have a report the occupant wasn’t home.”

A firefighter from Saugus was hospitalized with a non-life threatening injury battling the 5:30 a.m. blaze on Converse Way, fire officials said. Colangeli said state police arson investigators as well as the city’s own fire investigation unit are looking into what caused the fire.
