Mayday: 2 Texas firefighters injured at 3-alarm apartment blaze

44 firefighters were at the scene and two were taken to a hospital after sustaining injuries

IRVING, Texas — A mayday call was issued about 15 minutes into the fire attack, leaving at least two firefighters injured at a three-alarm fire at an apartment complex Saturday night.

“I believe they were coming downstairs and came to a landing where it turned, and the rail collapsed,” Assistant Fire Chief Rusty Wilson said.

A second firefighter was burned and both firefighters were taken to a local hospital for treatment, according to WFAA. One of the injured was released on Saturday night and the second was expected to be out the hospital Sunday afternoon.

WFAA reported that there was thunder and lightning when the fire broke out and the first alarm went out just before 6 p.m. By the time firefighters arrived, fire was blowing through the roof, according to the report.

A total of 44 firefighters were at the scene.
