HOLLAND, Mich. — Holland firefighters pulled an unconscious man from the basement of a burning home at 48 E. 22nd St. in Holland just after midnight Monday, May 30.

Firefighters also rescued a dog from the home’s first floor.

Both the rescued man and another man living at the home were transported to Holland Hospital for treatment.

“Two adult males are very lucky tonight,” said Holland Dept. of Public Safety Fire Capt. Chris Tinney.

While en route to the scene just before 12 a.m. late Sunday evening, May 29, firefighters learned there was a trapped man in the basement calling for help, Tinney said.

A police officer who had arrived on scene first attempted to locate the position of the man in the home.

Officials believe the fire started in the home’s basement. Flames spread from the basement to a side door on the east side of the home, encompassing the door frame.

Firefighters entered the home through an egress window and found the man unconscious in the back of the finished basement, Tinney said.

Within 10 minutes of arriving firefighters rescued the man, bringing him out of the side door to the home. Two firefighters had the man’s arms around their shoulders as the man walked out of the home.

Tinney said the rescued man’s condition is not yet known.

A second man living at the home had escaped the fire before first responders arrived. Tinney said it’s believed that the two men are related.

Tinney said he doesn’t believe the fire is suspicious.

The investigation is ongoing.
