COLUMBIA, Mo. — Columbia firefighters this weekend responded to two fires, including one early Sunday that caused $10,000 in damages to a southwest Columbia apartment.
Firefighters were called to 230 Apple Tree Court, Apt. 1, at 4:55 a.m. Sunday for a report of a residential structure fire, according to a news release.
Upon their arrival, crews saw fire in the back bedroom of the apartment. The fire was extinguished in less than 10 minutes and was confined to the bedroom.
Smoke detectors alerted tenants to the fire, and they were evacuated from the building. There were no injuries as a result of the fire.
Assistant Fire Marshal Brian Davison estimated damages at $10,000 and said the cause of the fire is still under investigation. The owner of the apartment building is Don Freese of Columbia.
On Saturday, firefighters were dispatched at 10:18 p.m. to Apartment 709 of Oak Towers, 700 N. Garth Ave., for a report of a commercial structure fire.
When they arrived, crews reported the sprinkler system had activated and extinguished the fire, which was caused by unattended cooking.
A significant amount of water on the seventh floor made its way to the first floor, and crews spent two hours cleaning up the water.
There were no injuries associated with the fire, and damages were estimate at $5,000.
