LONG BEACH, Calif. — A neighbor picked up a garden hose and held flames at bay Sunday until firefighters arrived at a burning home in Long Beach, a city fire official said.

The fire occurred this afternoon at 1126 Walnut Ave., said Matthew Dobberpuhl of the Long Beach Fire Department.

“The first units on scene found a man with a garden hose valiantly trying to put out a fire that had started in the living room of the single- family home,” Dobberpuhl said.

The man’s efforts kept the fire from spreading to the rest of the home, Dobberpuhl said.

At least 18 firefighters put out the blaze and no one was injured, he said.

Five residents of the home were displaced, however. They will be staying with family members.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
