SYRACUSE, N.Y. — A city firefighter fell through a hole in the second floor of a duplex engulfed in flames early Monday morning.
The firefighter, Timothy Boland, was searching for occupants on the second floor at 710 N. McBride St. when he fell through a hole that had burned through the floor. He didn’t go all the way through, but was caught up to his chest.
His partner, Firefighter Darryl Trapps, pulled him to safety. Neither Boland nor Trapps was injured, Lt. Tony Morgan said.
Neighbors reported seeing smoke pouring out of the two-family house shortly before 6 a.m.
Morgan said investigators believe the fire was electrical in nature and started in the “void” area between the first and second floors before spreading quickly through the wood-frame house. Neither the upstairs nor downstairs tenant was home at the time, Morgan said.
Investigators at the scene reported significant smoke, fire and water damage, he said.
