SOUTHINGTON, Conn. — A local family was saved from their burning home by a passing fire fighter, officials said.

Lt. Glenn Dube said Sunday night about 8:54 p.m. numerous calls came into the fire department about a house on fire at 56 Laurel St. An off duty fire fighter from Bridgeport was driving by the home and went inside to get the residents out, Dube said. The residents, which included grandparents and adult grandchildren, did not realize the home was on fire, Dube said. The home next door had also caught fire, and the off duty firefighter went to get those residents out of their home as well, Dube said.

“He did a good job,” Dube said of the off-duty fire fighter.
