FORT WAYNE, Ind. — A Fort Wayne firefighter was in the right place at the right time, which helped crews battle a blaze on the south side Monday morning.

At 7:12 a.m., an off-duty firefighter noticed smoke in the area behind the city fire department’s station at 2530 E. Pontiac St.

The smoke was actually coming from a two-story home at 2514 Manor St., which had a fire in its attic and other parts of the home, according to a fire department report.

Firefighters responded to the blaze and spent more than an hour bringing the fire under control.

Nobody was in the home at the time, but a pet was rescued from the house. The fire caused moderate damage to the home.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, and the Red Cross is assisting the family.
