MADISONVILLE, Ohio — A firefighter that was injured after falling down an elevator shaft while battling an apartment fire has died.

Cincinnati.com reported that earlier this morning firefighter Daryl Gordon, 54, suffered serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital. He is the first Cincinnati firefighter to die in the line of duty since 2003.

“We could just use the community’s prayers, the prayers for the family, we have one of our brothers in dire straits,” Fire Chief Richard Braun said at the scene.

Another firefighter suffered second-degree burns and residents suffered smoke inhalation.

Crews issued a mayday when they spotted the firefighter down and worked carefully to rescue him, according to the report.

The firefighter was extricated from the shaft and his colleagues ran him out of the building into an ambulance. He was taken to a hospital.

Fire crews also rescued several residents trapped on upper floors, including a toddler.

The blaze was reported under control by 6 a.m., but several residents were still visible in windows above the second floor as firefighters continued evacuations, according to the report.
