LAGOS STATE, Nigeria — About 300 bolt-up shanties were between Wednesday night and early Thursday destroyed, as fire ravaged ‘Small Kuramo’, around Kakande area of Ajah, in Lagos State. Mostly affected by the fire incident were the displaced former occupants of Kuramo Beach, especially sex workers, who relocated to Jakande area in Ajah to start new life.
The fire was said to have started from a power generating set, whose owner was trying to refill its petrol without turning it off. Fire fighters from Eti Osa, Sari Iganmu and Onikan, who were drafted to the scene were attacked and injured by hoodlums, who reportedly were trying to loot at the scene of the fire incident.
The attack on the fire servicemen occurred less than three hours after some officials of the Lagos State Fire Service escaped death and a fire truck vandalised by miscreants, while responding to a distress call at Church Street in Ketu area of the state.
