HAZELWOOD, Mo. — Multiple St. Louis county fire departments fought a fire at a Hazelwood recycling plant Saturday afternoon next door to a propane gas company. The Hazelwood Fire Chief sounded three alarms bringing in three aerial trucks and extra man power because of temperatures hovering at the 90 degree mark.

The fire started in mounds of trash piled around the Republic Services Recycling firm in the 6000 block of Byassa just north of Lambert Airport and west of the Berkeley city line. As of Saturday night no cause had been found for the fire.

By the time Hazelwood firefighters reached the scene the flames had spread to the north side of the recycling plant and some oil drums on site were swelling from the heat.
