NEW YORK — A retired NYPD cop made the catch of his life early yesterday — saving a baby whose mom had dropped him from a window of a burning home in Queens.
Shamel Lawrence, 26, who lives around the corner from the house at Rockaway Boulevard and 144th Street in Ozone Park, was on his computer at around 3:30 a.m. when he heard screaming.
He rushed to the scene and saw Sandra Goncalves desperately dangling the 9-month-old boy from the window of a smoke-filled second-floor room.
Seconds later, Lawrence and an unidentified good Samaritan linked their arms and caught the baby when as the woman let him go.
“I saw smoke and when I turned the corner, I see a baby dangling out the window,” Lawrence told WNBC/Channel 4, adding that he’s “no hero.”
The pair also caught a little girl who climbed out the same window and jumped.
“I did what I did, you know, from the kindness of my heart,” Lawrence said.
Firefighters from Engine 302/Ladder 155 then rescued six adults in the house with a ladder.
Officials said the fire was suspicious.
