WASHOUGAL, Wash. — Police said Thursday they’ve removed the remains of a dog apparently killed by gunfire from the rubble of a home that burned to the ground as a man fired multiple rounds from rifles and handguns.

Clark County Sheriff’s Sgt. Kevin Allais said there was still no sign of the man in the ruins of the southwest Washington home. But authorities are confident he did not get past a SWAT team that surrounded the house Wednesday morning. Authorities were searching the area and expect to have more information Thursday afternoon.

The large residential property included a house and shop. The gunfire forced firefighters to let the fire burn itself out and the buildings were destroyed. Police were not sure whether anyone else was in the house.

No serious injuries were reported from the gunfire, although one bullet pierced the side window of an arriving police car.

Police evacuated nearby houses and four schools were temporarily locked down.

No police fired their weapons, officers said.

Authorities have declined to discuss a possible motive for the gunfire.
