ATLANTA — While firefighters are away fighting fires and responding to emergencies, their personal cars are being targeted by thieves.
WSB-TV reported that thieves have forced car locks open and smashed windows. Thieves struck a fire station a few days ago when firefighters were out on a call for three hours, according to the report.
“They can’t put their vehicles in the bay. They can’t secure them. They have to go on calls. They have to serve the public,” said Wayne Hines with the Fulton County Professional Firefighters’ Union. “And they’re just open, easy targets. There’s more burglaries going on down there around those stations. Those firefighters car have been broken into again. Nothing’s changed.”
In November, Chief Larry Few said burglars broke into nearly a dozen cars parked outside three different fire stations.
“If a combination of fencing and cameras are necessary we will do that,” Chief Few said.
Chief Few said the assessment of extra security has been completed and is working with the county to get this done in a timely manner, according to the report.
