CHILLUM, Md. — A couple and their 2-year-old twin grandchildren were killed in a house fire Tuesday morning.
NBC Washington reported that firefighters were called to the house after 2 a.m., where seven people were home at a rental house when a fire broke out.
Frantic family members outside the home told firefighters that 2-year-old twins Anna and Israel Omijie and their grandparents were trapped inside.
“We did the very best we could to get inside to get those people out,” Prince George’s County Fire spokesman Mark Brady said.
Fire Chief Marc Bashoor said the twins were pulled from the home almost immediately and taken to a children’s hospital. They both died from their injuries at the hospital. The grandparents died at the scene.
“It’s going to be a rough day for the firefighters who are here,” Bashoor said.
The mother of the twins suffered non-life threatening injuries when she jumped from a second-story window. Two others escaped safely.
Investigators found no evidence that the rental home was equipped with smoke detectors. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
