WORCESTER, Mass. — Investigators are seeking the cause of a fire that killed one woman and injured as many as a dozen firefighters in Worcester.
District Fire Chief Frank Deliddo said 47-year-old Christina Lavoie became trapped on the third floor of the triple-decker on Chilmark Street. Deliddo said firefighters tried valiantly to rescue Lavoie, but she was unconscious when pulled from the building.
Lavoie, a grandmother, worked as a waitress at a nearby diner.
Deliddo said eight of the injured firefighters were treated at area hospitals and three remained hospitalized Friday for treatment of dehydration or exhuastion.
About 12 residents, including children, were displaced by the 3-alarm fire that broke out around 10 p.m. and was brought under control about one hour later.
