OAKWOOD, Ill. — Ned Gorski had every reason to feel anxious.

The 61-year-old Cincinnati man had just been in his first major traffic accident. He watched an ambulance take his 17-year-old grandson to a hospital to be checked out. And his personal items — including thousands of dollars’ worth of commercial-grade fireworks supplies and tools — were strewn all over the highway.

Gorski said he managed to keep his wits about him and get through the ordeal thanks to a local firefighter. “He was my guardian angel that day,” Gorski said of Tony Frye, chief of the Oakwood Fire Protection District and one of the first emergency responders on the scene. “I expected (emergency personnel) to be professional. But I didn’t expect anyone to go out of their way like Tony did. ... He was just a calming influence, and he helped me get through a very tough situation.”
