INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The chief of the Indianapolis Fire Department is planning to retire and move into a new position in the Department of Public Safety, officials announced Wednesday.

Brian Sanford, who has been IFD chief since July 2008, will become the chief of staff for the office of Public Safety Director Troy Riggs, helping to oversee the DPS’ eight divisions.

In the coming weeks, Riggs will establish a selection strategy to fill Sanford’s role, and Sanford will stay chief until a replacement has been named.
