LODD: NC fire chief suffers medical emergency

CLAY COUNTY, N.C. — A volunteer fire chief died while on duty at a dirt track car race.

Firefighter Close Calls reported that Chief James D. “JD” Robinson, 59, with the Brasstown (N.C.) Volunteer Fire Department, had a medical emergency during standby at a car race.

CPR was begun immediately and EMS was contacted when crews realized he was not breathing. He was treated at the scene and transported to a hospital, but later succumbed to his injury. It appears to have been a heart attack, according to NCFFF.org.

Chief Robinson was also a fire instructor, wildland firefighter for the North Carolina Forest Service and an accomplished musician. He had over 30 years in the fire service.
