WINDHAM, N.H. — When James Brown was growing up, the town’s fire dispatcher would relay to him any call that came in. At 8 years old, Brown would run down to the station, write it on the chalkboard, open the doors and often tag along with the firefighters rushing out, who warned him not to tell the fire chief.

The chief was his father. The dispatcher was his mother. He never considered any other line of work. Now he’s on the other side of that career, retiring this week after 48 years with the Windham Fire Department. The lieutenant was feted Monday afternoon at the station, where colleagues, friends and local dignitaries reflected on his accomplished tenure serving the town.

As they munched on sandwiches, salads and snacks at long tables draped in red, several dozen attendees swapped stories and listened to brief speeches about Brown’s time at the department.
