SPENCER, N.Y. — As of August 5, Spencer Fire Department has a new chief. Scot Gillette, who was previously the first assistant chief, stepped up to the plate to become acting chief after the resignation of Derek Grier, the department’s former chief, earlier this year.

If you think you recognize Gillette’s name, you’re probably right – earlier this year he ran for village trustee. Now, however, Gillette is serving the Spencer community in a different capacity.

Though he currently lives in Spencer, Gillette grew up in Candor. He began volunteering as a firefighter in Candor 32 years ago and has been with the Spencer Fire Department ever since moving to Spencer 16 years ago. Gillette still works in Candor, where he has been an employee of the town’s highway department for 26 years.
